An invitation
after dusk.
By the time you reach the house, rain has darkened the stone steps. Through the open doors comes the slow, uneven sound of a piano: the same few bars, begun again.
You pause in the hall. The air smells of polished wood and the sea. Your folded invitation is damp along one edge; you smooth it with your thumb before slipping it into your pocket.
To your left, lamplight falls across a room lined with books. Ahead, the terrace doors stand open. Beyond them, someone is moving a lantern among the trees.
Where does your curiosity lead?
